Warren Road Pupil Premium Statement

The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools with pupils on roll who are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any time in the last six years; looked after children; or children of service personnel. Schools have the freedom to spend the Pupil Premium, which is additional to the underlying schools budget, in a way they think will support raising the achievement of disadvantaged pupils.

Nationally there continues to be a gap in their level of achievement when compared to all other pupils. However, at Warren Road by the end of KS2 children entitled to the Pupil Premium exceed national benchmarks for all other children ie not including children entitled to the Pupil Premium, for attainment at age-related expectations and the higher standard. The majority of pupils’ over time make better than expected progress. We are confident that this position will be sustained in 2019.

Principles

The targeted and strategic use of Pupil Premium will support us in achieving our vision of Excellence for All. In using the Premium at Warren Road, we will adhere to the following principles:

• The highest quality provision teaching and learning will be provided for all pupils.
• We recognise that not all pupils who are disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil or group of pupils the school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged.
• Pupil Premium funding is allocated following a needs analysis. Limited funding and resources means that not all children disadvantaged children will be in receipt of Pupil Premium intervention at one time.

Barriers to Learning

Whilst the needs of all children will be established in order to provide the highest quality teaching and learning, some common barriers have been identified:

• Poor early communication and language development.
• Limited access to wider experiences and opportunities.

Provision

At Warren Road, we use the Premium to fund those activities/interventions which we consider to be the most effective in raising the achievement of disadvantaged pupils. Research on the impact of different strategies including work undertaken by the Education Endowment Fund and Ofsted is used to shape the school’s provision.

Effective strategies include:

• High-quality teaching and learning which addresses the needs of all children with effective differentiation so all pupils are suitably challenged.
• 1 to 1 and small group support by experienced teaching/support staff focused on closing gaps in learning for children working towards achieving age-related expectations as well as those aiming to exceed this.
• A focus on oracy and opportunities for pupils to develop key speaking and listening skills.
• High-quality feedback to pupils to address misconceptions, reshape learning and establish clear next steps.
• A focus on the development of personal and social skills.
• Additional teaching and learning opportunities are provided by external agencies.
• Keeping parents fully informed on their children’s progress and how they can support their learning at home.

We recognise that high-quality class teaching has the greatest impact on pupils’ learning and their achievement. Class teachers are fully informed about the needs of the pupils in their class and differentiate learning accordingly and have the highest expectations of all pupils.

We aim to close any gaps in pupils’ learning as early as possible and for this reason, we will direct support into Early Years and KS1 with a focus on pupils’ Communication and Language Development. We track the progress of all pupils and whenever any pupil falls behind implement strategies that will enable them to catch up.

We recognise achievement in all its forms and do our best to ensure disadvantaged pupils benefit from a broad and balanced curriculum. We will provide opportunities to ensure all pupils can take part in all activities including residential visits, clubs and activities – no disadvantaged pupils will be excluded from these activities.

Pupil Premium provision and impact reports

It will be the responsibility of the Headteacher, or a delegated member of staff, to produce regular reports for the governing body, via the Teaching, Learning and Achievement Committee on the achievement of disadvantaged pupils and the impact of the school’s strategy.
